Growing up Codi and Hallie were always considered as one. From when they were little they had to stick together because really they didn't have any other family. Their mother died shortly after Hallie was born and Homero (their father) was not a truly there to help them with problems. Codi, being the older one, always did things first.
She was the bigger one of them and acted as if a mother on Hallie. When they got older that all changed, Codi looked up to Hallie for guidance. Hallie went of to go to Nicaragua to help the crops and to stabilize citizens. Codi not knowing what to do went back to their hometown, grace, to teach biology and to help their father who is going senile. Even though Codi and Hallie are very similar in ways such as being tall and traveling, they are also very different. Hallie is confident, Knows where she belongs, and has high self esteem. Codi on the other hand is not confident, she has very low self esteem, and to top it all off she doesn't know where her true home is. Losing so many people in her family (her mother, sister, baby, almost father) has really confused her. She is looking for her home to come to her with open arms without giving it a real shot. "I was getting a dim comprehension of the difference between Hallie and me. It wasn’t a matter of courage or dreams, but something a whole lot simpler. A pilot would call it ground orientation. I’d spent a long time circling above the clouds, looking for life, while Hallie was living it." (pg 226) Even as Codi moves to grace she still turns to Hallie to help her with many situations. Hallie is already stressed enough with everyone turning to her to help out. "Codi, how long are you going to keep limping around on that crutch? Its the other way around, Its what you do that makes you who you are" (pg 224) Hallie with out thinking goes to place where there is danger and fear, because of this idea without second guessing herself she got kidnapped. Now Codi is left to take care of herself and not to depend on Hallie.
