In the book eclipse they had a war between the newcomers and the vampires and werewolves. The vampires and werewolves were of course going to win but they did not no that victoria, a vampire wanting to kill bella would be there. She was there and edward was the only one to defend her. He was not supposed to win, she is much stronger then he is, it showed bella how much he cared for her. Edward over came odds and defeated bellas number one enemy.
